Procrastination - A habit to be overcome
What is procrastination?
Procrastination is the act of delaying and putting off the tasks until the last minute, or past their deadline. Procrastination is a form of self-regulation failure characterized by an irrational delay of tasks despite potentially negative consequences. According to Joseph Ferrari at De Paul University in Chicago, 20% of adults in the USA procrastinate. Not only in the USA but in India also especially 15 % of young adults procrastinate.
Procrastination has a major impact on our life and career goals. Delaying work, exercise, dinner or lunch may have negative effects on our life, job, and career.
Why does one procrastinate?
There are many reasons one does procrastinate:
• Feeling bored - if one does find an activity boring or useless then he/she delays work.
• Lack of belief in your abilities - if we do not believe in our efficiency or we believe that this task cannot be carried out by us then we are sufferings from self-efficacy, in such a case one procrastinates its work.
• Fear and Anxiety - One may procrastinate out of fear. For example, one may delay his/her assignment out of fear of failing to do so.
• Perfectionism - One may delay tasks and procrastinate if they find that they cannot perform better until they get the best level of motivation.
• Distraction - a person especially a teen gets distracted and that too in the lure of social media, these distractions make one forget their tasks, a waste of time.
